One of the most popular, charsmatic and the only Non-Congress Prime Minister who completed full 5 year term and successfully ran a coalition government of more than 15 political parties.
A leader with such a caliber, credentials, credibility, courage, vision undoubtedly deserves to be back in power
But unfortunately his failing health keeps him away from the politics. He could not speak anymore and is bed-ridden.
- A visionary statesman who believed in "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisaan, Jai Vigyan". He was very curious science & technology. He encouraged private research & development and proposed scores of development projects throughout the country with the latest technology. The Delhi metro being one of them for which Congress tries to take the credit.
- Passed Chandrayan-1 project where India decided to send a spacecraft to orbit the moon and map its surface in detail. He announced this on 15 August 2003 from his Independence Day address to the nation. "I am happy to announce that by 2008 India will send a mission to the moon". And in October 2008 Chandrayan-1 lifted off the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Andhra Pradesh.
- National Highway Development Project- He proposed a project to upgrade, rehabilitate and widen major highways in India to a higher standard. ABV's Golden Quadrilateral Project, connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata & Chennai, completed 80% under NDA. 20% still going on by UPA in 9 yrs. All the major world class National Highways connecting major cities of the country which you see are the result of Vajpayee's vision.
- A man with balls who didn't care of the criticism from the world superpowers like America and European Union and went forward withPokhran Nuclear Test to make India a Nuclear Power. When criticized for the futility of the tests see what he had to say:
- Sarva Shiksha Abhyaan or Education for all - He very well understood the importance of education and made it compulsory for children aged 6-14 to have free education as a fundamental right. It improved the quality of education at the Primary and Secondary level to a great extent. Also many new schools were opened under the programme.
- Lahore Summit - Despite the wars of 1965,1971 with Pakistan and tensions after Nuclear Tests, he pushed a full scale diplomatic peace process with Pakistan and initiated a direct bus service from Delhi to Lahore in February 1999. He personally accompanied the bus when it first crossed Indo-Pak border.
- Kargil War - But as expected Pakistan back-stabbed India and in May 1999 Pakistani soldiers along with Kashmiri militants infiltrated Indian side of LoC. We all know what happened.
- Courage to cite his clear cut stand on Kashmir(not like our present PM who motivates Pakistan when he speaks on Kashmir) Watch this video.
- Linking rivers - Atal ji planned linking 37 rivers to get rid of the curse of droughts & floods. UPA came to power & pushed aside the plan citing cost reasons
- Telecom Deregulation- He is credited with telecom deregulation as a result of which phone STD rates dropped from Rs.24 to Rs.5 & Incoming on mobile dropped from Rs.16 to 0.
